Carl Gustav Otto Lohse (born September 21, 1858 in Dresden ; † May 5, 1925 in Baden-Baden ) was a German conductor and composer.

biography

Lohse studied with Hans Richter and Felix Draeseke at the Dresden City Conservatory. In 1882 he became the conductor of the Wagner Society and the Imperial Russian Music Society in Riga ; seven years later he was the first conductor of the local city theater. In 1893 he was appointed director of the city theater in Hamburg ; During his stay in Hamburg he married the singer Katharina Klafsky for the second time . The couple traveled to the United States in 1896 to join the Damrosch Opera Company , but returned to Germany a year later. After Klafsky's early death, he married Josefine Kratz , who became his third wife. Since his return, Lohse has held important conducting positions in Strasbourg (1897–1904), Cologne (1903–11), the Théâtre de la Monnaie (1911–12), and the Stadttheater in Leipzig (1912–23). He conducted performances of works by Richard Wagner at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London from 1901 to 1904. Lohse was awarded the honorary title of Royal Professor in 1916. His only opera, The Reluctant Prince , premiered in Riga in 1890.
