Otto Maria Miethke

Otto Maria Miethke (-Gutenegg) (born March 13, 1881 in Vienna ; † March 8, 1922 ibid) was an Austrian painter , graphic artist , illustrator and poet who also signed as Otto Maria Miethke-Gutenegg or Otto zu Gutenegg (monogram " zG. ”), after the Gutenegg Castle near Cilli in the former Duchy of Styria, which his father bought ; the place Celje (Cilli) belongs to Slovenia today .

Life

Otto Maria Miethke was a son of the Potsdam- based gallery owner and art dealer Hugo Othmar Miethke and his wife Mary, nee. Lanz. He was married to Jessica O'Leeson and was given a grave of honor at the Vienna Central Cemetery , Gate 4, Evangelical Cemetery

Artistic career

From 1901 to 1902 he was initially a student of Kolo Moser at the Vienna School of Applied Arts and then moved to Heinrich Knirr in Munich . He was in London when World War I broke out and was interned from 1914 to 1918 .

"Influenced by Beardsley and Rops as a draftsman, his imagination came up with grotesque depictions of gruesome piquancy, often with a social punchline and erotic allusions." He caricatured the age of romanticism , created oil paintings , watercolors and etchings . He can be counted among the forerunners of the “ Fantastic Realists ”.
