Otto Prechtler

Johann Otto Prechtler (born January 21, 1813 in Grieskirchen ; † August 6, 1881 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian playwright , poet , librettist and civil servant (archivist). In his era he was played a lot on Austria's stages.

Life

Otto Prechtler was born in 1813 in simple circumstances. He studied history and philosophy in Linz and Vienna. He also worked briefly as a Catholic clergyman.

From 1834 to 1851 he was employed as a civil servant at the Court Chamber in Vienna. This was followed by an activity from 1851 to 1856 as an assistant director in the Ministry of Regional Culture and Mining and then from 1856 until his retirement in 1866 he was archive director in the Ministry of Finance of the Austrian Empire, as the direct successor of Franz Grillparzer , with whom he had a lifelong friendship.

The writer Prechtler was particularly successful as a dramatist during his lifetime. He wrote short stories, travel memories, a good 20 dramas, 30 opera libretti and a few small volumes of poetry.

He was also theater director in Munich in 1867/1868.

Prechtler died in Innsbruck on August 6, 1881.
