Otto Wilhelm Fiedler (born April 3, 1832 in Chemnitz , † November 19, 1912 in Zurich ) was a German-Swiss mathematician , known for his textbooks on geometry and his contributions to descriptive geometry .

Life

Fiedler was the son of a master shoemaker. He went to the higher trade school in Chemnitz with a state scholarship and from 1849 attended the Bergakademie Freiberg as an external student . In 1852 he became a mathematics teacher at the Werkmeisterschule in Freiberg and in 1853 at the trade school in Chemnitz. He had to look after his widowed mother and siblings and continued his self-study without attending university. He received his doctorate in mathematics in 1858 at the University of Leipzig under August Ferdinand Möbius ( The central projection as a geometric science ).

He made a name for himself through the translation of the textbooks on Analytical, Projective and Algebraic Geometry by George Salmon (known in Germany as Salmon-Fiedler in the 19th century). He was friends with Salmon and studied his theological works in retirement (Salmon turned entirely to theology from the mid-1860s).

In 1864 he became professor of descriptive geometry at the Technical University of Prague and in 1867 professor at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich (on the mediation of Karl Culmann ). In 1907 he retired.

His doctoral students include Marcel Grossmann and Emil Weyr . Hendrik de Vries was his assistant.

He was a member of the Leopoldina (1889) and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (1906). In 1884 he received the Steiner Prize of the Prussian Academy of Sciences , and in 1907 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Vienna .

He was born in 1860 with Line Elise. Springer married. In 1875 he was naturalized in Zurich. His son Ernst (1861–1954) was a mathematics professor and rector of the Oberrealschule in Zurich. His son Karl (1863-1894) was a private lecturer in zoology in Zurich.
