Otto von Baeyer [ ˈbaiɐ ] (born September 12, 1877 in Reichenhall , † August 15, 1946 in Tutzing ) was a German physicist .

Life

Otto von Baeyer was a son of the chemist Adolf von Baeyer . In 1895 he passed the Abitur examination at Munich's Maximiliansgymnasium , with Fritz Gablonsky and Otto Groth , among others , and then studied physics in Munich and Leipzig. In 1905 he received his doctorate with Otto Wiener in Leipzig with the thesis "Absorption of electrical vibrations of 70 cm wavelength" . He became an assistant at the Physics Institute at the University of Berlin , where he completed his habilitation in 1908. He became a private lecturer and two years later he received the rank and title of (associate) professor. After military service in World War I , he became a full professor of physics at the Agricultural University in Berlin in 1921 . He held this position until 1939. Von Baeyer spent the last part of his life near Munich. He died in Tutzing in 1946 and was buried in the Munich forest cemetery.

From 1905 to 1945 Otto von Baeyer was a member of the German Physical Society .

Scientific achievements

He published a paper on slow cathode rays . As a measuring device he used a high vacuum triode as a hot cathode ionization vacuum meter . Because the grid was positively charged and the anode negatively charged, von Baeyer could not determine that his device was an amplifier. Otto Hahn and Lise Meitner , together with Otto von Baeyer, devoted themselves to the magnetic deflection of β rays. For the first time they succeeded in obtaining beta ray spectra from a number of radioactive emitters.
