Overmars was a French post-metal band founded in Lyon in 2001 .

history

After Xavier Théret moved from Montpellier to Lyon at the end of 2000 , he got to know the local metalcore band Donefor at concerts . Théret and the Donefor drummer Benjamin Pic decided after a few talks to start a joint project. The remaining musicians of the band Donefor joined, as well as Antoine Simon, in the same year. Together with published donefor Overmars 2002, a self-produced split - EP , which should also highlight both the final end of donefor as the beginning of Overmars.

After two further split releases for small indie labels , Overmars presented their debut album Affliction, Endocrine ... Vertigo in 2005 via the French record company Appease Me on the French , via Candlelight Records on the European and via Crucial Blast Records on the American market. The album received various reviews from the critics. While Visions and Metal Hammer, among others, gave positive grades, the Ox-Fanzine and Rock Hard judged rather average to negative about Affliction, Endocrine ... Vertigo .

In 2007 the second studio album, Born Again , followed, consisting of a single 39:19 minute piece. After two more EPs and a longer European tour, the band played their only US tour in 2009 with the American band Battlefields . Returning to France, another split EP was released in 2010, which should be the last release of the band.

In 2009, Xavier Théret left the band to form the black metal-inspired extreme metal project Neige Morte . Théret's exit also meant the end of the band.

Nevertheless, a US tour followed in 2009 without Théret and in 2011 a European tour with a greatly changed line-up with the electro punk band Binaire, in which Antoine Simon also plays guitar. Overmars subsequently disbanded in June 2011.

Since the beginning of 2014 Arnaud Bitschy, Antoine Simon and Benjamin Pic have been playing together with the band Aya † ollah again.

Surname

The band name was inspired by the Dutch soccer player Marc Overmars and was chosen after a suggestion by guitarist Antoine Simon. The term Overmars, however, also refers to “infinite space” and, according to Théret, is intended to awaken associations of intense and infinite space.

“Depending on who is telling the story, the origin of the name is different * laughs *. You just have to know that we adore Marc Overmars and are deeply sad that he has ended his active career. "

Songwriting

Xavier Théret 2006 with Overmars.

Overmars arranged and composed the music collectively as "a collective work in which everyone participates" around the previously written texts. The lyrics were mainly written and presented by Benjamin Pic. Building on this, the musicians brought in various ideas such as certain riffs or rhythmic figures. From the interaction of text and music, new ideas flowed together until a uniform work for the band emerged.

content

Xavier Théret explained that the band sees itself as part of the hardcore punk scene and wants to express fundamental political views, also in the band's lyrics, without being instructive or striking.

“They are just personal views on some of the problems facing modern society. We don't offer solutions, we don't tell people how to act, we just say: “We stink, I'm not satisfied with that and that could be something that I do [sic!] To relieve my bitterness of all of you express. ""

- Xavier Theater

style

Overmars are mainly compared to well-known representatives of post-metal , such as Isis , Neurosis and Cult of Luna , but also Godflesh . Théret also answers the question about the possible comparables and influencing factors with one of the main representatives of the genre.

"I would call NEUROSIS because they are our main influence and we feel very close to them in musical and artistic expression."

- Xavier Théret
