Oxytelus sculptus is a beetle from the family of the short-winged species (Staphylinidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 3.5 to 4 millimeters. Their bodies are very slim, flattened, and brown-black in color. The middle of the pronotum and the wings are brown to brownish-red in color. The seam strip runs parallel to the wing cover seam , with the area in between being smooth and shiny. The scutellum is covered by the pronotum. The legs are yellow. The compound eyes are proportionally very large. The fourth and fifth links of the antennae are roughly the same length.

Occurrence and way of life

The animals are cosmopolitan . They occur in Europe from the Mediterranean to Lapland and northern Russia and also on the British Isles . You can find them in fields, pastures and gardens under stones, in compost and manure. They occur in Central Europe from April to October, the larvae are found from August to September. They are not uncommon in Central Europe and are common in the north and east of Germany and in the Danube Plain and Burgenland . In the mountains, in the foreland and in the low valleys, the animals are not common, in subalpine locations they are only rarely found.
