Geotope and geomorphology
Since August 23, 1983, the 16.36 hectare area north of Bundesstraße 2 and east of Pähl Castle has been a nature reserve. The nature reserve (NSG100.078) extends essentially to the left and right of the banks of the Burgleitenbach over a length of about one kilometer and a width of about 100 m.
The Pähler Gorge is known nationwide for its waterfall with a free fall height of 16 m. The back of the waterfall is accessible. Here the Burgleitenbach falls, which among other things at around 2 km east and 760 m above sea level. NN located Berndorfer Buchet springs, a tuff notch in the gorge. The waterfall can be reached on foot from Pähl in about an hour.
In the spring of 2014, the canyon forest was heavily thinned and almost all old trees were removed. The forest area, which was previously characterized by closed high forest with rich herbaceous growth and secondary natural age structure of the trees, has been largely converted into open land. The long-term effects were controversial.
