Pachnoda cordata is a species of beetle from the subfamily of the rose beetles (Cetoniinae).

features

The 15 to 25 millimeter long beetles show a pattern of dark spots on the pronotum and elytra on a bright yellow background . Depending on the subspecies, these can be deep black, light to dark brown or brown with a black border. There are subspecies in which all the spots stand out sharply from the yellow background and those in which some have a blurred edge. The combination of differently designed dark drawing elements can also be found. The spots are arranged in four rows. Often the second pair differs in color from the others. These spots are often darker, smaller, and more rounded than the rest and occasionally have a fuzzy border. The drawing of the first, third and fourth row of spots on the elytra seems to consist of four spots, often completely running together. On the pronotum there are a large pair of spots, also occasionally connected to one another, and two smaller spots on the front edge. Often the elytra and pronotum have dark edges. On the yellow head, the eyes are covered by two dark areas that look like blinders. These meet on the forehead and create a yellow triangle that is open at the bottom. While the legs of the legs are yellow, which are rails rotgelb and the tarsi dark brown back. The ventral side is mostly yellow. The edges of the segments of the thorax and abdomen are darkly edged. The males have a dark colored longitudinal groove in the middle area of the abdomen, which the females lack.

Name and system

No common German name is currently in use for Pachnoda cordata . The nominate form was described in 1773 by Dru Drury under the name Scarabaeus cordata . Already in 1790 Herbst described a species which he first classified in the genus Cetonia newly established by Fabricius in 1775 and which he named Cetonia tigris . This was later recognized as the first subspecies of Pachnoda cordata .

The following subspecies are currently distinguished:

  • Pachnoda cordata cordata ( Drury , 1773)
  • Pachnoda cordata camerounensis Rigout , 1984
  • Pachnoda cordata dahomeyana Rigout , 1985
  • Pachnoda cordata obsoleta foam , 1844
  • Pachnoda cordata tigris ( autumn , 1790)
  • Pachnoda cordata villiersi Ruter , 1953

Distribution, way of life and keeping in the terrarium

Pachnoda cordata is distributed in the various subspecies over large parts of Central and West Africa to South Africa. Finds from Cameroon ( Pachnoda cordata camerounensis ), Togo ( Pachnoda cordata dahomeyana ), Ghana , Burkina Faso , Benin , Ivory Coast , Guinea , Mali , Nigeria , Chad and Senegal are known.

The diurnal beetles are similar in behavior, nutrition and reproduction to other species of the genus Pachnoda . They are considered to be easy to moderately difficult to keep in the terrarium and, like the Congo rose beetle ( Pachnoda marginata ), can be fed on ripe fruits. As with this, the substrate should consist of a forest soil-humus mixture with additionally brought in, white rotting wood of oak , beech , maple or linden , which larvae and beetles can gnaw on. The larvae grow up very quickly. The pupil rest takes about three to five months. Until the Imagines begin to lay eggs, often take several months. In return, however, they reach an age of six to twelve months.
