The Padola (Italian Torrente Padola ) is a mountain stream in the province of Belluno , Veneto / Italy .

course

The Padola rises northeast of the Kreuzbergpass in the Dolomites on the South Tyrolean side.

As a waterfall, it pours over a rocky slope on the Venetian side, is bridged there by Strada Statale 52 Carnica (viewpoint) and then flows in a south-easterly direction - partly over meadows and partly through spruce forest - down into the valley into Cadore .

In the municipality of Comelico Superiore it flows through the village of the same name and further below Dosoledo and Candide via the municipality of San Nicolò di Comelico to Santo Stefano di Cadore , where it rises approx. 900 m above sea level in the Piave flows.

Lock (Cidolo) and water room (Stua) of Padola

The rafting was from the Middle Ages until the beginning of World War I, a main industry of Cadore. The logs felled in the surrounding forests were stopped at numerous locks and water rooms - also at Boite and Piave - and collected for onward transport to the Perarolo di Cadore distribution center .

The lock south of the town of Padola - a dam built over by a wooden bridge - is the only one in Cadore that has been preserved. It may also be the oldest; In any case, it is already mentioned in a sales contract from 1521 and in other documents from 1537 and 1635, which document the rights holders. In the years 1818-19 the complex was reconstructed with stone blocks. For tourist purposes it was restored at the beginning of the 21st century and made accessible again.

In Perarolo di Cadore, since 2005, the Museo del Cidolo e del Legname has been explaining the rafting that existed in Cadore until 1915, when it was replaced by rail transport.
