Padraic Rowan

Padraic Rowan (also Pádraic Rowan ; * 1990 in County Meath ) is an Irish opera and concert singer ( bass baritone ).

Life

Padraic Rowan is from Dunboyne , County Meath in eastern Ireland, where he attended St. Peter's College. His grandfather was a Sean nós singer , but the family had no other connection to singing or opera . Rowan learned the piano in his youth .

He first completed an undergraduate degree in International Relations at Dublin City University before deciding on a career as a singer. He studied singing at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, trained by Mary Brennan and Brenda Hurley . In 2013 he finished his studies with a master’s degree.

Padraic Rowan's first professional experience was with small roles at the Wexford Festival Opera , Glyndebourne Festival Opera , BBC Proms and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. In the 2013/14 opera season he was engaged as a cover for several roles at the Glyndebourne Festival and the Glyndebourne Touring Opera . In 2015 he sang “First Soldier” in Salome and “Mandarin” in Calixto Bieito's Turandot production at Northern Ireland Opera . In the 2015/16 season he was heard at the Irish Youth Opera as Diener Lesbo in the Handel opera Agrippina . In May / June 2016 he sang the role of Colline in La Bohème with the Opera Theater Company. In 2016 he sang the role of Betto di Signa in Gianni Schicchi as part of “Les Azuriales Opera” in Nice .

In the 2016/17 season Padraic Rowan was a member of the Opera Studio of the Stuttgart State Opera . There he already took on a few small and medium-sized roles in productions of the Great House, including the roles of Conte di Ceprano in Rigoletto , Masetto in Don Giovanni , High Priest of Baal in Nabucco and 5th Jew in Salome . In Demis Volpi's new production of the Britten opera Death in Venice , he was cast as a tour guide. In the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons he continued to work at the Stuttgart State Opera.

In the 2017/18 season he was a guest at the Landestheater Coburg , among others as Figaro ( Le nozze di Figaro ), Angelotti ( Tosca ) and Alidoro in La Cenerentola . In summer 2018 he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in L'incoronazione di Poppea under the direction of William Christie . In the 2018/19 season he sang Prince Yamadori in a new production by Madama Butterfly at the Stuttgart State Opera . In the 2018/19 season he made a guest appearance at the Irish National Opera with the role of speaker in a new production of Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte . In June 2019 he took over the role of Theseus in the Britten opera A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Neville Holt Opera in Leicestershire .

Padraic Rowan has been part of the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin since the 2019/20 season . The roles in his first season include Zuniga in Carmen , the sacristan in Tosca and the old man in Jenůfa . He is also planned for the new productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream (as Theseus) and Das Rheingold (as Donner, directed by Stefan Herheim ). In spring 2020 he will make his debut at the Semperoper Dresden as Méru in Die Huguenots .

Padraic Rowan is also regularly active as a concert singer. His repertoire includes the bass parts in Bach's St. Matthew Passion and the B minor Mass , Mozart's Requiem and C minor Mass , Haydn's The Creation and John Stainer's oratorio “The Crucifixion”. In spring 2017 he sang the bass part in Handel's Messiah with the Staatskapelle Halle, and in 2017 with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in Ireland. In the 2017/18 concert season, Padraic Rowan took part as a soloist with the “Jardin des Voix” on a tour of the “ Les Arts Florissants ” ensemble under the direction of William Christie and Paul Agnew . In spring 2019 he was the soloist in Bach's St. Matthew Passion with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in the National Concert Hall in Dublin. At the beginning of April 2019 he sang the bass part in the St. John Passion together with the Stuttgart Hymn Choirboys and Martin Petzold .

Padraic Rowan lives in Berlin .

Awards

Rowan has received several scholarships and has won several singing awards.

  • 2016: First prize at the international singing competition "Les Azuriales"
