Paesens-Moddergat ( West Frisian Peazens-Moddergat ) are actually two villages in the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân in the province of Friesland ( Netherlands ). However, both villages form a community and the residents consider it one village. Paesens and Moddergat have a combined population of 460 (as of January 1, 2017).

Paesens and Moddergat are in the north of the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân and are two fishing villages with a long history. One of the sights in the village is the fishing museum 't Fiskershúske (The Fisherman's House), where you can learn more about fishing life in the past. It consists of a few restored fishermen's houses from the late 18th century . Behind the dike you have a clear view of Schiermonnikoog , Engelsmanplaat and, in good weather, also of Ameland .

history

'T Fiskershúske Museum (The Fisherman's House)

In 1449 the stream that gave the villages of Paesens and Moddergat their names was silted up. In the 19th century the village had a large fishing fleet. But on the night of March 5 to 6, 1883, 83 fishermen were killed and 17 ships were destroyed in a storm. For the villages of Paesens-Moddergat, this disaster marked the beginning of the decline of their coastal fisheries.

A monument erected on the dike still reminds of this today, on which the names of the fishermen and the registration numbers of the ships were immortalized. The letters WL are used to designate the ships of the former municipality of Westdongeradeel.

Even today fishing still has an important place in the village. But nowadays the ships are in the port of Lauwersoog . Until the territorial reform that was completed in 1984 , Paesens belonged to the former municipality of Oostdongeradeel and Moddergat to Westdongeradeel.

natural gas

It has been known for several years that there is a considerable amount of natural gas in the Wadden Sea near Moddergat . For years there have been protests against planned funding, as there were fears that the water and the surrounding area would be polluted. In addition, there was fear of a possible subsidence of the ground in the wake of natural gas extraction. In this context, reference was repeatedly made to East Groningen , where the soil gradually sags in the wake of natural gas extraction. There are regular smaller earthquakes in Middelstum , which are also associated with natural gas production. Despite the fierce controversy, a natural gas production tower has already been built in the sea off Moddergat.

The broadcasting company Nederlandse Christelijke Radio Vereniging started a television program in 2004 in which the most beautiful spot in the Netherlands (De mooiste plek van Nederland) was determined. In the final broadcast on November 27, 2004, Moddergat came in second behind the Weerribben National Park .

On the western edge of the town is the small open-air museum 't Fiskershúske , which shows the life of coastal fishermen in the 19th and 20th centuries in several preserved fishermen's houses.
