description

Habitus
Ligule
Inflorescences of the same age

Vegetative characteristics

Pairas sedge is a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 30 to 80 centimeters. The root bark is brown. It grows tightly clumpy. The mostly rigid, upright stalk is triangular and slightly rough.

The arch of the ligule attachment is hardly higher than it is wide. The leaf blades are 2 to 3 millimeters wide, smooth or slightly rough and usually dark green in color.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period is mainly from May to July. Pairas sedge is a sedge of the same age. The three to ten spikelets are more or less close together in a 2 to 3 centimeter long inflorescence . The lowest three spikelets can be arranged at intervals of 0.5 to 1 centimeter, very rarely the lowest spikelet is further away. All spikelets are oval and spread sharply at the fruiting time due to the protruding fruit tubes. They each contain male flowers in the upper part and female flowers in the lower part.

The husks are oval to lanceolate in shape and colored pale brown. They are keeled greenish. The broad, egg-shaped fruit sacs are about 3 to 3.5 millimeters long. They are usually long beaked and have two scars.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 58.

Similar species

The Pairas sedge ( Carex pairae ) differs from the very similar chunky sedge ( Carex muricata ) by its somewhat smaller fruit sacs and pale brown husks. The similarly similar prickly sedge ( Carex spicata ) has a significantly higher ligule arch as well as cork-like filled fruit sacs in the lower part.

Occurrence

Nothing is known exactly about the overall distribution. However, Pairas sedge seems to be found scattered throughout Central Europe.

According to the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families , Carex pairae occurs in Macaronesia , in northwest Africa and in Europe as far as central Turkey .

Carex pairae grows on the edges of forests and forest roads, but also in grasslands . It prefers fresh, nutrient-rich soils.
