Palisade is a place (status "Populated Place") in the US state of Nebraska . The place is in both Hitchcock County and Hayes County . At the April 2010 census , Palisade had 351 inhabitants. US Highway 6 and Nebraska Highway 25A run through the town .

history

Samuel L. True built a shop at the confluence of Bobtail Creek and Frenchman River in 1879, and he also built a home for his family. He called the property "Palisade". True was appointed postmaster in 1880. The place started to grow, more houses and shops were built. When the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad extended their route network towards the Palisade in the early 1880s , True bought larger land to benefit from the expected growth of the place through the railroad. However, the new route was planned half a mile away from Trues Land. The Lincoln Land Company, which owned this land, made plans for a new location and initially named it "New Palisade". By 1897, almost all the houses had been moved from the “old” to the “new” palisade. At that time, the place extended into Hitchcock and Hayes Counties.

The announcement in 1890 that the railway line would no longer be built led to Palisades' growth stalling. The tracks were finally laid through the town in 1891. In 1892, the Frenchman Valley Irrigation Project began, which greatly boosted agriculture in the area. The completed railway line and the irrigation program in turn led to considerable growth in the area, with churches, shops and houses being built.

The local FC Krotter installed the first power supply in Palisade in 1911 and thus ensured an economic upswing that lasted until the stock market crash in 1929 . In 1931, Krotter also financed the city's establishment of a public swimming pool and a park, which is now named Krotter Parc in his memory .

From around 1943 a prison camp for German prisoners of war existed in Palisade . The up to 130 prisoners housed supported the local farmers with the maize harvest. The Germans were known among the locals for their singing while working. The camp was closed in December 1945, today a plaque commemorates it.

In the 1950s, Palisade reached its highest population with around 800 people.

Public facilities

In Palisade there is a school that belongs to the Wauneta-Palisade Public Schools , and there is also a public library. The swimming pool, which was the largest in the state when it was built in 1931, was extensively renovated in 1983.

monument

A palisade war veteran memorial is located downtown on Nebraska Highway 25A. The memorial was built from 2001 to 2006 and commemorates the veterans of all wars and conflicts in the past. It consists of five granite steles with over 700 names engraved on them. A small park-like area would be created around the monument.

Events

The Palisade Pioneer Days are held in Palisade every June . The festival extends over three days, in addition to various events, the alumni dinner will be held for all Palisade High School graduates.
