Pandanus utilis is a species of the screw trees ( Pandanus ) in the family of the screw tree plants (Pandanaceae). The first description by Jean Baptiste Georges Geneviève Marcellin Bory was published in 1804.
description
Pandanus utilis is an evergreen plant that forms a trunk up to about 6 meters high. Older specimens develop stilt roots that increase the stability and storm resistance of the plant. Sometimes the lower trunk dies and the plant lives on, only supplied by the stilt roots. Pandanus utilis has very long, sword-shaped leaves that are sharp-edged and armed with individual thorns on the edge. The leaves are arranged in a spiral.
Pandanus utilis is dioecious ( diocesan ). The male flowers are fragrant. The female flowers are sessile to about 100 or more in a raceme; from this a pineapple-like fruit association develops , which consists of many small stone fruits ( stone fruit association ). The more or less spherical false fruits are edible, if not particularly tasty.
distribution
The home of Pandanus utilis is in the western Indian Ocean on the Mascarene Islands ( Mauritius , Réunion and Rodrigues ).
Today the species is also introduced in other parts of the world with subtropical climates; among other things, it is planted in the Antilles as well as in California and Florida .
use
The leaves or fibers obtained from them are used, among other things, to cover roofs or to make packing material, mats and baskets.
