Pannigerian alphabet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pannigerian alphabet is a variant of the Latin alphabet or the African alphabet that has been expanded to include numerous special characters and is used in Nigeria . It represents a common set of characters from which the orthographies of the numerous Nigerian individual languages (including Hausa , Yoruba , Igbo ) are used. Sometimes very complex sound systems with the simple Latin alphabet (A – Z) would be difficult to write.

The price for the adequate spelling of the phonetic inventory is the numerous special characters, some of which (such as Ƙ / ƙ - »K with a hook«) are rarely used outside of Nigeria. Corresponding typewriters are used in Nigeria ; for computers, however , the unusual characters are still a major problem (see also the article on Unicode ).

The Pannigerian alphabet was designed in 1985 by the typographer Hermann Zapf and borrows from the International Phonetic Alphabet .

It is noteworthy that it is not the alphabet of a certain language, but of a certain area: Within Nigeria it is used to write numerous languages, on the other hand, for example, the Pannigerian alphabet is used for Hausa in Nigeria and a completely different one in the neighboring state of Niger Orthography.

Some characters do not have their own code point, so that combination characters must be used, such as U + 0304 for the superscript macron and U + 0331 for the subscript macron.
