Kesfeld is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Arzfeld .
geography
The municipality is located in the West Eifel , only a few kilometers east of the state borders with Luxembourg and Belgium . The municipality extends over the plateau of Leidenborn and is about 8 km south of Pronsfeld . Parts of the Spielmannsholz and Dromigt residential areas (both partly belonging to Üttfeld ) belong to Kesfeld and are about 1 km from the main town.
With 85.6%, a comparatively large part of the municipality is used for agriculture, 9.8% are forest (as of 2011).
Neighboring communities are Heckhuscheid in the north, Üttfeld in the east, Leidenborn in the south and Großkampenberg in the west.
history
Various archaeological finds, building remains, bricks, clay pots and barrows prove that the area was settled early by Celts and Romans . The place in its current form was created during the clearing phase in the 12th century, which is also suggested by the ending of the place name.
The place name is probably due to the Kesselbach flowing through the village. Kesfeld was mentioned in a document in 1245/1265 as "Kesselveld". Until the end of the 18th century, the place belonged to the administrative and judicial district of the Harspelt dairy within the Dasburg dominion in the Duchy of Luxembourg .
In 1794 French revolutionary troops occupied the Austrian Netherlands , to which the Duchy of Luxembourg belonged at the time, and annexed it in October 1795 . Under French administration , Kesfeld belonged to the canton of Arzfeld , which was administratively assigned to the arrondissement of Bitburg in the department of forests .
Due to the resolutions at the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the former Luxembourg area east of the Sauer and Our was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia . From 1816 the place belonged to the mayor's office in Leidenborn in the new district of Prüm in the administrative district of Trier and from 1822 to the end of the Second World War it belonged to the Rhine province . After 1936 the community belonged to the Daleiden-Leidenborn office .
In World War II, about 90% of the town were destroyed. The place was evacuated in September 1944. The US troops reached the area on September 16, with the front initially stalling. Therefore, until the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 , Kesfeld was right on the front line. In February 1945, Kesfeld was taken again by US troops.
Since the municipal reform in 1971, Kesfeld has been part of the Arzfeld community and the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm (then: District of Bitburg-Prüm ).

coat of arms
Blazon : "From silver (white) to red divided by a blue-silver (-white) sloping bar, in front three golden (yellow) grain grains on each side, behind a red high cross on a two-tiered base (calvary cross)." | |
Reasons for the coat of arms: Red and silver are the colors of the Counts of Vianden, who have owned the Luxembourgish rule Dasburg and thus Kesfeld since the 14th century . The blue-silver wavy bar stands for the Primmerbach and the Kesselbach. The Hochkreuz can be found in the center of the village and is intended to remind of the horrors of war. The Christ figure of the cross was badly damaged in World War II and was stored in a barn for a long time. |
The coat of arms designed by Christian Gredner in collaboration with the citizens of Kesfeld was approved on August 11, 2010 by the local authority of the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm.
Economy and Infrastructure
Today, Leidenborn is an agricultural community. Since 1971, when 20 agricultural holdings were counted, the agriculturally used area has decreased comparatively sharply from 317 ha to 170 ha (2005), which were cultivated by 7 holdings. Kesfeld's agriculture used to be known for growing oats and oat seeds.
The town center is away from major thoroughfares; the state roads that run along the edges of the municipality can be reached via municipal roads.
Kesfeld is the location of a volunteer fire brigade with 15 members.
