Career

Club career

Paolo Conti, born in 1950 in the Emilian city of Riccione , in the province of Rimini , began playing football for the local amateur club, FC Riccione . It was there that the talent scouts of FC Modena discovered him , and in 1970 he switched to the second division. In Modena , Paolo Conti immediately became a regular goalkeeper and played in Serie B football for two years , but last year he was relegated to the third division. Then Conti changed clubs and joined AC Arezzo , also second class at the time. With the team from Arezzo he reached 13th place in the table at the end of Serie B in 1972/73, which is to be rated as a success according to the possibilities of the club. Due to his good performances in second division football, clubs from the first-class Serie A became aware of the young goalkeeper, finally Paolo Conti moved to AS Roma in the summer of 1973 in the Italian capital .

The Roma were not necessarily among the top teams in Italian football at the time. In the year before Paolo Conti's arrival, they were only eleventh. Also noticeable was a latent goalkeeper problem, which coach Manlio Scopigno , a few years earlier sensational championship with the US Cagliari , intended to solve by purchasing Conti. But even in the first season of the new keeper in the AS Roma jersey, there was not much improvement. They were only in midfield again and Scopigno was soon dismissed, the first era of Nils Liedholm began as the Roma coach . Under the Swedes, the team's performance improved noticeably with players such as Giancarlo De Sisti , Bruno Conti and Agostino Di Bartolomei , and they finished third in 1974/75 . After things went down a little again, Paolo Conti experienced a title win with his club in the last year of his engagement in Rome . In the Coppa Italia 1979/80 they defeated Torino Calcio on penalties in the final and won the national cup for the first time since 1969. Paolo Conti had already lost his regular place in the Roma goal to Franco Tancredi and left the club in the summer of 1980.

Conti went to the second division team Hellas Verona the following season , where he stood in goal for a year and made 31 league games during this time, but only reached 14th place in the table, barely they did not relegate. Conti Hellas then left Verona again, while the club developed very positively and just four years later brought the Italian football championship to the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi . Conti, meanwhile, went to Sampdoria Genoa , where he was promoted to Serie A in the first year and was able to stay there in the second year. But as in Verona and previously in Rome, Conti left a club before beginning one of his most successful phases. Also Samp developed after Contis outlet to an absolute top club, won Championship, European Cup and national cup. But Paolo Conti went to AS Bari in the C1 series and rose to the B series with the southern Italians. He then moved to Fiorentina , but did not come to regular goalkeeper Giovanni Galli and only made two league games in four years. In 1988, Conti finally ended his active career at the age of 38.

National team

Between 1977 and 1979 Paolo Conti made a total of seven international matches in the Italian national football team . National coach Enzo Bearzot called him into the Southern European squad for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina , but only acted as the third goalkeeper behind Dino Zoff and Ivano Bordon at the tournament . As a result, Conti was denied a World Cup appearance. The Italian team, meanwhile, finished fourth after losing 2-1 to the Brazilian team for third place.
