Paragobiocichla irvinei ( Syn .: Gobiochromis irvinei , Leptotilapia irvinei , Steatocranus irvinei ) is a West African cichlid species that is endemic in the catchment area of the Volta . Due to overfishing , environmental degradation and the spread of invasive species, especially the water hyacinth , Paragobiocichla irvinei is considered to be potentially endangered (Near Threatened).

features

Paragobiocichla irvinei is a slender, elongated species of cichlid in which the males reach a maximum length of 17 cm and the females reach a maximum length of 12 cm. The fish are medium gray in color, dominant animals are almost black. Depending on the mood, two dark vertical stripes are visible. The lower lip is blue, the dorsal fin is lined with white. This border is often wider in the females than in the males. The latter show a light green-yellow or reddish sheen in their unpaired fins.

Systematics

The species was described in 1943 by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas as Gobiochromis irvinei , but in 1996 it was transferred to the genus Steatocranus by Roberts and Stewart without detailed justification . The species differs from all other species of the genus Steatocranus by the protruding upper jaw and the scaled gill cover . It is also found in West Africa, while all other species of the genus Steatocranus are common in river sections with many rapids in the Congo Basin . During a revision of the substrate- spawning Tilapiini by German scientists, a relationship of the species with Gobiocichla was established and a new tribe for the genus Gobiocichla and its closest relatives, the Gobiocichlini, was introduced . At the beginning of October 2019, the monotypical genus Paragobiocichla was introduced for the species .
