Election to the National Council in Slovakia in 1994
The early parliamentary elections for the National Council in Slovakia in 1994 took place on Friday, September 30th and Saturday, October 1st, 1994. 150 seats in the National Council were to be allocated. It was the first National Council election since Slovakia's independence in 1993, as the previous National Council election in 1992 took place within Czechoslovakia .
The 1994 parliamentary elections in Slovakia were followed by the authoritarian phase of " mečiarism ".
prehistory
The early election became necessary when the second government of Vladimír Mečiar failed in a vote of no confidence in the National Council (so-called parliamentary coup) and on March 15, 1994, President Michal Kováč instructed the former Foreign Minister of Mečiar's government, Jozef Moravčík, to form a temporary government .
Electoral system
The National Council was elected using proportional representation. There was a threshold clause of 5% for individual parties, 7% for a coalition of two to three parties and 10% for four or more parties. The legislative period was 4 years.

18 political parties and movements with a total of 1,929 candidates ran for election.

The turnout was 75.65% and thus continued the downward trend of the previous election years.
A total of around 3.9 million eligible voters were called on September 30 and October 1, 1994 to cast their votes.

consequences
The new government came into being two months after the election. The coalition agreement between HZDS, RSS, ZRS and SNS was concluded on December 12, 1994; a day later, the President appointed the third government of Vladimír Mečiar, which is also known as the authoritarian phase of " Mečiarism ".
