The film was commissioned by Swarovski for the Swarovski Crystal Worlds. The film was the first short film by the Indian director Shekhar Kapur. The voice for the music of AR Rahman comes from Kavita Baliga .

Passage premiered on September 6, 2009 at the Rhode Island International Film Festival .

The European premiere was on September 7, 2009 as part of a private screening in the Granai della Repubblica in Giudecca , Venice . Numerous celebrities from the 66th Venice International Film Festival, which is running at the same time, were invited to the Passage Party organized by Swarovski . After the event, the film was published on its own website.
