The river Paatsjoki ( Finnish ) or Pasvikelva ( Norwegian ) or Paz ( Russian - Паз, Патсойоки, Patsojoki ) ( Northern Sami Báhčeveaijohka ; Scoltsamian Paaččjokk ) flows through three states in the far north of Scandinavia. It drains the largest lake in Lapland , the Inarijärvi .

geography

Shortly after leaving Inarijärvi (German: "Inarisee") in Finland, the river flows through Russian territory, later it becomes the Norwegian - Russian border river. At Kirkenes it flows into the Bøkfjord , a branch of the Varangerfjord , in Elvenes , and finally into the Barents Sea .

There are seven hydropower plants along the river with an installed capacity of 275.9 MW and an annual output of around 1.475 TWh.

history

The river only became a Norwegian-Russian border river after the Continuation War . Before that, the right bank of the river belonged to Finland.
