Patrick Fernández Flores

Patrick Fernández Flores (born July 26, 1929 in Ganado , Jackson County , Texas , † January 9, 2017 in San Antonio , Texas) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of San Antonio .

Life

Patrick Fernández Flores was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Galveston on May 26, 1956 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on March 9, 1970 auxiliary bishop in San Antonio and titular bishop of Italica . The Apostolic Delegate in the USA , Luigi Raimondi , donated him episcopal ordination on May 5th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Francis James Furey , Archbishop of San Antonio and John Louis Morkovsky , Coadjutor Bishop of Galveston-Houston .

On April 4, 1978 he was, also by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of El Paso and inducted into office on May 29 of the same year. On August 23, 1979, he was appointed Archbishop of San Antonio by Pope John Paul II , and on October 13 of the same year he was introduced to the office. On December 29, 2004, he also accepted Flores' age-related resignation.

hostage taking

On June 27, 2000 , Nelson Antonio Escolero, originally from El Salvador , broke into the archbishop's office and took both the archbishop and his secretary hostage. With a dummy rifle Escolero tried to prevent the threatened deportation. After about three hours, Escolero released Myrtle Sanchez, the secretary. The hostage-taking, some of which could be followed live on television, ended bloodlessly after a total of nine hours through talks and negotiations.
