Patrick G. Walsh

Patrick Gerard Walsh , also Peter Walsh (born August 16, 1923 in Accrington , Lancashire , † January 16, 2013 in Glasgow ) was a British classical philologist .

Life

Patrick G. Walsh attended Catholic College in Preston on a scholarship and then studied classical philology at the University of Liverpool , also on a scholarship . After graduating from First , he served in the Royal Air Force's Intelligence Corps during World War II .

After military service, Walsh completed a doctorate at the National University of Ireland and then taught as a lecturer at Dublin University . He later moved to the University of Edinburgh as a professor , which later awarded him an honorary doctorate (D.Litt.). In 1972 Walsh went to the University of Glasgow as Professor of Humanity , where he worked until his retirement . In 1983 he became a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . He has lectured as a visiting professor at the University of Toronto , Yale University , the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Georgetown University .

Walsh dealt with wide areas of Latin literature, ranging from classical Roman prose to Christian authors and into the Middle Ages. He wrote fundamental studies and text editions on the historical work of Livy , the ancient novel ( Petronius , Satyricon and Apuleius , Metamorphoses ), the church fathers Paulinus von Nola , Augustinus von Hippo and Thomas von Aquin , the poet Andreas Capellanus and the Carmina Burana . He continued his research well into old age, before Parkinson's disease made it impossible for him.
