After his return he mainly represented the interests of the Jacobites in the Spanish government . During the war of the Quadruple Alliance , Laules was sent to Sweden to meet with King Charles XII. to negotiate a joint military landing in Scotland . But already on his way via Amsterdam and Hamburg he learned of the death of the Swedish king, whereupon he received the order to go to Saint Petersburg and meet Tsar Peter I.

After Laules had been promoted to lieutenant general (June 5, 1719) he was entrusted on March 8, 1720 with the post of government chargé d'affaires in Paris , where he arrived on May 15. On March 27, 1721 he received the rank of ambassador .
