Patrick Neeson Lynch
Patrick Neeson Lynch (born March 10, 1817 in Clones , County Fermanagh , Ireland , † February 26, 1882 in Charleston , South Carolina , USA ) was Bishop of Charleston .
Life
Patrick Neeson Lynch came to the United States with his parents in 1819. The family settled in Cheraw . Patrick Neeson Lynch studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Charleston seminary . On April 5, 1840, he received the sacrament of ordination .
Lynch was in Rome in Catholic theology doctorate . He was then secretary to the Bishop of Charleston. He also taught at the Charleston seminary.
On December 11, 1857, Pope Pius IX appointed him . to the Bishop of Charleston. The Archbishop of Baltimore , Francis Patrick Kenrick , donated him episcopal ordination on March 14, 1858 ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Mobile , Michael Portier , and the Bishop of Savannah , John Barry .
On February 20, 1864, Patrick Neeson Lynch was sent as a delegate to Rome by the President of the Confederate States of America , Jefferson Davis , in order to obtain recognition of the Confederate States of America by the Holy See . But Pope Pius IX. received him only in his ecclesiastical function and refused recognition by the Confederate States of America.
Patrick Neeson Lynch attended the First Vatican Council .
