Patrick M. Shanahan
Patrick Michael Shanahan (born June 27, 1962 in Aberdeen , Washington ) is an American politician and former industry manager . Since July 19, 2017, he has been the United States Deputy Secretary of Defense . From January 2019 to June 2019 he was the acting Minister of Defense .
Career
education
Shanahan studied at the University of Washington ( Bachelor of Science ), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( Master of Science ), and the MIT Sloan School of Management ( Master of Business Administration ).
Boeing
Shanahan joined Boeing in 1986 . Most recently he was Senior Vice President there. During his time at Boeing, Shanahan was responsible for Boeing Rotorcraft Systems in Philadelphia. Furthermore, the military flight programs of the US armed forces in Philadelphia and Mesa belonged to his area of responsibility. These include the production facilities for the Boeing AH-64 combat helicopter , the Boeing-Vertol CH-47 transport helicopter and the Bell-Boeing V-22 VTOL transporter . As Vice President and General Manager, he led the Boeing 757 program and from 2007 to 2008 the Dreamliner program.
From December 2008 he was Senior Vice President Airplane Programs at Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
In April 2016 he became Senior Vice President, Supply Chain & Operations for Boeing. His responsibilities in this position included manufacturing operations and supplier management functions, specifically implementing advanced manufacturing technologies and global supply chain strategies.
Shanahan was a member of the Boeing Executive Council.
Ministry of Defense
On March 16, 2017, he was nominated by Donald Trump as United States Deputy Secretary of Defense. The nomination of Shanahan, who had no military or political experience, came as a surprise to outsiders. After the Senate hearing, he was elected United States Deputy Secretary of Defense by the Senate on July 18, 2017, by 92 votes to 7 .
After Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis announced his resignation on February 28, 2019 on December 20, 2018, Trump announced on Twitter on December 23 that Shanahan would take over the office of Mattis on January 1, 2019, a maximum of 210 days without a hearing process before the US Senate is possible.
On May 10, 2019, President Trump announced that Shanahan would take over the Pentagon as Secretary of Defense. On June 18, 2019, however, Trump announced that Shanahan would no longer pursue the process for nomination as Secretary of Defense and would devote more time to his family. His successor was the previous Secretary of State for the Army, Mark Esper .
Awards
In February 2019, Shanahan was elected to the National Academy of Engineering .
