Paul Bernhard Rothen (* 1955 in Stockholm ) is a Swiss evangelical reformed pastor, author and speaker.

Live and act

Rothen grew up in Münsingen in the canton of Bern , he attended the Neufeld secondary school in Bern . He studied Protestant theology in Bern and Heidelberg . He completed a doctoral semester in Lund, Sweden, with the Lutheran systematist Bengt Hägglund , followed by theater and art studies in Paris . In Bern he received his doctorate with a thesis on the theological foundations with Martin Luther and Karl Barth with the title The Clarity of Scripture. This was published in two volumes by the German publisher Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht .

From 1984 to 1992 he was pastor in Zweisimmen in the Bernese Oberland , from 1992 to 2010 second pastor at Basel Minster and at the same time head of the Evangelical Study House in Basel . Since 2010 he has been pastor in rural Hundwil in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden . In 1996 he founded the “ Brother Klaus Foundation” with like-minded people . In 2018 he also published a book on Brother Klaus with the title Let the name of Jesus be your greeting , in which he processed historical facts, interpretations of the time, current arguments and uncomfortable findings.

As an author, he designed church plays and scenic readings and conceived the spatial installation such as From Love To The Bern Letter by Niklaus von Flüe as a traveling exhibition.

Together with the Protestant theologians Stefan Felber and Peter Wick , he made critical inquiries about some modern German Bible translations , because they would have made fundamental changes in terms, meanings and assignments that would not be mandatory from the Hebrew and Greek basic text. They have put forward 18 theses on these Bible translations and transcriptions in order to show their reformulations and to criticize reinterpretations.

Since 2011 he has been giving lectures on the Koran , in which he tries to show similarities and differences to the Bible . Rothen paints a critical picture of the state of the Evangelical Reformed regional churches in Switzerland, with which he wants to shake up the readership and challenge them to repent.

He is a member and president of the Swiss Evangelical Theological Parish Association, which advocates theology, church service and mutual support for pastors. Theological debates are also held regularly and Rothen's theses on the Reformed pastoral office and the state of the churches in Switzerland were controversial because his view was not shared by all members.
