Paul Chan (born April 12, 1973 in Hong Kong ) is a Chinese - American painter , video and installation artist .

life and work

Paul Chan grew up in Omaha , Nebraska . He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago until 1996 . In 2002 he received his Masters from Bard College . He is a political activist and artist. Paul Chan founded Badlands Unlimited book publisher in 2010, which publishes print products and e-books.

In 2003 Chan became known with the film Happiness (Finally) After 35,000 Years of Civilization (after Henry Darger and Charles Fourier ). In 2007 he directed the theater project Waiting for Godot in New Orleans in a district of New Orleans badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina . The video Sade for Sade's sake (2009) was exhibited at the 2009 Venice Biennale . The work Volumes (2012) consists of 1005 painted book covers. Parts of it were shown at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel in 2012 and in Schaulager Basel in 2014 .

Paul Chan received the Hugo Boss Prize in 2014 . This was followed in 2015 by the exhibition Nonprojections for New Lovers at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum .
