Paul Dan

Paul Dan (* 1944 ) is a Romanian pianist and music teacher.

Dan was a student of Joseph Willer , Ella Philip , Georg Halmos and Florica Musicescu , the teacher of Dinu Lipatti and Radu Lupu and studied at the music academies of Cluj-Napoca and Bucharest . In 1968 he won the advancement award of the Bach Competition in Leipzig and was able to continue his education with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Hugo Steurer's master class in Munich , which he completed with distinction. Since 1973 he has been visiting professor at the Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo , since 1978 he has been professor for piano and chamber music at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim.

As a soloist, Dan has performed with the Vienna Symphony , the Stuttgart Symphony , the New Japan Philharmonics , the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra . In addition, chamber music was a focus of his activities. He worked u. a. with Aldo Baldin , Shmuel Ashkenasi , Ulf Hoelscher , Wanda Wilkomirska , Enrique Santiago , Daniel Grosgurin , Angelika May and the Auryn Quartet .

In addition to the classical piano repertoire, Dan also played the works of George Enescu , composers from the Mannheim School as well as premieres and world premieres of works by contemporary composers such as Ernst Krenek , Ernst Toch , Hans Vogt and Peter Michael Braun .

In 1996 he retired from concert life for health reasons and has worked exclusively as a teacher ever since. His students include a. Valentin Schiedermair , Peter Tilling , Asli Kilic , Ivo Hentschel , Annette Volkamer , Kai Adomeit , Caroline Fischer , Jens Schlichting and Christopher Espenschied .
