Paul Desmond Fitzgerald AM (born August 2, 1922 in Hawthorn , Victoria , Australia - † June 24, 2017 in Kew , Victoria, Australia) was an Australian portrait painter .

Paul Fitzgerald was the second son of Frank Fitzgerald - journalist and art critic for The Argus and The Age - and his wife Margaret nee. Poynton born. He attended Xavier College in the Kew neighborhood of Melbourne and studied portrait painting at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School from 1940 to 1943 and from 1946 to 1947 , interrupted by service in the Australian Army during World War II .

In 1949 he earned money while crossing over to London by portraying passengers traveling with him. He spent a total of five years in London and was able to travel to France, Italy and Spain through his portrait painting to visit museums and galleries. Those portrayed included well-known personalities such as the former Governors General of Australia Alexander Hore-Ruthven and William Slim and the naval officer and private secretary of Prince Philip Michael Parker (1920–2002). He also met his sister, the actress and television presenter Mary Parker (* 1930), and met both of them again in Australia, where they lived in Kew for the opening of the 1956 Summer Olympics . In 1957 he and Mary Parker married in the chapel of Xavier College.

Paul Fitzgerald was the founder of the Australian Guild of Realist Artists in 1974 and its first president until 1981.

He was the father of seven children, three sons (one of whom died) and four daughters. He had Parkinson's disease since around 2004 .

Paul Fitzgerald portrayed members of the British royal family , politicians, lawyers, scientists, artists, athletes and other public figures; he painted in fifteen countries around the world.

He portrayed the British Queen Elizabeth II twice, in 1967 and 1977 as the official portrait on her silver jubilee throne .

He is one of the finalists of the Archibald Prize three times , in 1958 with a portrait of the judge Robert Vincent Monahan , in 1962 with a portrait of Robert Menzies and in 1972 with a portrait of Henry Bolte .
