Paul Friedrich von Benckendorff (nickname Paul, Russian Павел Ермолаевич Бенкендорф * November 26 jul. / 7. December  1784 greg. In Gatchina ; † December 2 jul. / 14. December  1841 greg. In Tallinn , Governorate of Estonia ) was a Swedish-Baltic state politician, knightly governor of the Estonian knighthood and Russian civil governor of the Estonia governorate from 1833 to 1841.

Life

origin

Paul v. B. came from the Estonian-Swedish aristocratic family " von Benckendorff ", which had its origins in Salzwedel in the 16th century . His father was Hermann Johann von Benckendorff , who was married to Christine Elisabeth von Brevern for the second time .

Career

Paul von Benckendorff served in the Semjonovskoye bodyguard regiment from 1802 to 1804 and attained the rank of lieutenant . After that he was estate manager at Ass and Sternhof until 1806 . In 1806 he was appointed company commander of the land militia. During this time he was promoted to major and expanded the Benckendorffs' land holdings with the purchase of the Warrung and Lammasküll estates . From 1813 to 1818 he held the office of hook judge , from 1818 to 1824 he was elected as district deputy . Subsequently, he took over the office of knight captain in the Estonian knighthood . Between 1827 and 1834 he was appointed District Administrator and then State Councilor. After all, he was civil governor of the government from 1833 to 1841 and was awarded the Imperial Russian Order of Saint Anne (1st class) in 1840 . During his tenure as governor he campaigned for the rebuilding of the Olaikirche in Reval , which had previously burned down. In 1835 he was part of the founding consortium for the purpose of creating a people's teacher seminar , which was opened in 1837 in Alexanderhof (Estonia) as a village school teacher seminar.
