Jean Louis Paul Gervais (born September 7, 1859 in Toulouse , † March 11, 1944 there ) was a French painter, poster artist and fresco artist.

Paul Gervais studied at the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Toulouse in 1876 and at the École des beaux-arts de Paris in 1879 , where he was a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Gabriel Ferrier . In 1891 he went on a study trip to Spain , visiting Seville , Granada , Bilbao , Saragossa , Madrid and Barcelona . In Spanish museums he studied works by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo , Francisco de Goya , El Greco , Peter Paul Rubens , Antonio Gisbert , Tizian , Diego Velásquez , Pieter Brueghel the Elder , Juan de Valdés Leal and others. a. He spent the period from February to August 1892 in Seville and Granada and from September to December 1892 in Rome .

As a member of the Salon des artistes français, he won numerous awards. Paul Gervais showed two large-format pictures at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 : “The Judgment of Paris” from 1894 and “Titania with the Donkey” from “ Midsummer Night's Dream ” from 1897.

Paul Gervais was mainly concerned with wall painting. He painted mythological and allegorical scenes with many female nudes.

Thanks to his relationship with the lawyer and politician Jules Pams , he was commissioned to decorate the Hotel Pams in Perpignan .

Thanks to the support of the politician Gaston Doumergue , he received several public contracts: for the Court of Besançon (1902), the Ministry of Colonies (1910, 1914, 1917), the École supérieure de la marine (1924) and the Elysee Palace. He also created murals in casinos in Nice and Monte Carlo .

For the manufacturer of JOB brand cigarette papers, he created a series of advertising posters depicting women who smoke .

In 1904 he taught at the Académie Vitti in Paris and became a professor at the École des beaux-arts de Paris as successor to Jean-Léon Gérôme , then from 1907 to 1912 at the Académie Julian in Paris.

Paul Gervais was promoted to officer of the Legion of Honor in 1908 .

Paul Gervais was the father of the writer, painter and doctor Albert Gervais (* 1892).
