Gabriel Joseph Marie Augustin Ferrier , signature Gabriel-Ferrier , (born September 29, 1847 in Nîmes , † June 6, 1914 in Paris ) was a French painter .

Life

Ferrier was born in Nîmes as the son of a pharmacist. He received his training at the École des Beaux-Arts , where he studied with Ernest Hébert and Isidore Pils . From 1869 he exhibited at the Paris Salon , in 1872 he was awarded the Prix ​​de Rome and spent several years in Rome with the associated scholarship.

He was mainly active as a portrait painter. Especially at the time of the Third Republic , his work was sought after by the nobility and leading politicians. Stimulated by a trip to Algeria in 1883, he turned increasingly to orientalist scenes.

Ferrier initially teaches at the Académie Julian , later also at the École des Beaux-Arts. His students included Paul-Émile Bécat , Roger Bissière , Clémentine-Hélène Dufau , Albert Lynch , Erich Kips and Alfred Mohrbutter .

At the world exhibition in 1889 he was awarded a gold medal, he was a member of the Legion of Honor and the Académie des Beaux-Arts .
