Paul Gillon (born May 11, 1926 in Paris , † May 21, 2011 in Amiens ) was a French cartoonist .

Career

Paul Gillon was in the sanatorium in Berck from the age of six to twelve because of bone tuberculosis . When he started school after this time, he did not make friends with his classmates. He remained a loner and saved himself through his school days by drawing. He was fired from a religious school in Vincennes after three months.

Gillon was self-taught . At the age of 14, he was already drawing caricatures for the magazines Samedi Soir , France Dimanche and Gavroche . In 1947 he got a job with the comic magazine Vaillant ; he took over the series Lynx Blanc , Capitaine Cormoran and Wango and worked with the authors Roger Lécureux and Jean Ollivier . With Fils de Chine he created his first own series in 1950, in which he portrayed Mao Zedong . He drew the 160-page story in black and white, almost independent panels , in which the text blocks established the connection between the images.

In 1961 Gillon began a collaboration with the Journal de Mickey . Until 1964 he drew several episodes of the series Les temps des copains for this magazine based on texts by Jean Canolle. This was an adaptation of the television series of the same name, which in turn was an adaptation of a novel by Canolle. Further works for the Journal de Mickey were La déesse d'or (1961), a sequel to the television series of the same name, Téva (1973), an adaptation of the television series of the same name based on texts by Georges Tardy, and finally Le Fantôme de Barbe Noire (1977) , an adaptation of Robert Stevenson 's feature film Blackbeard's Ghost .

From 1964, Gillon worked with Jean-Claude Forest on the series Die Schiffwüchigen der Zeit , which appeared in Chouchou magazine. The series about a couple from the 20th century who woke up in a space capsule after 1000 years of deep sleep and had to come to terms with the inhabitants of the solar system was discontinued after nine pages and only continued in 1974 in the daily France Soir . She became known with the other publications from 1977 in Métal Hurlant . From volume 5, Gillon also wrote the scenarios.

From 1959 to 1972 he drew the Daily strip 13, Rue de l'Espoir for France Soir . There were 4139 episodes that were republished in two anthologies by Les Humanoïdes Associés in the early 1980s .

From 1984 to 1991 Gillon created the four-part post-apocalyptic comic series The Survivor (Original: La Survivante ). This series is about a young woman who was trapped in a cave for several days while diving due to a sudden rise in water. When she finally reappears, almost all of the people are burned; only the robots are left. These now populate the world and go about their activities that have become pointless. The comic series first appeared in L'Écho des Savanes . The survivor was first published in German by Alpha-Comic and then by All Verlag .

Awards

In 1982 he received the Grand Prix de la Ville d'Angoulême at the International Comics Festival in Angoulême .
