Paul Gladbach († January 27, 1688 in Rüthen ) was a German sculptor and painter. He is one of the leading designers of baroque church furnishings in the Duchy of Westphalia .

Life

Gladbach's activity is first documented in Geseke in 1667 , before he acquired the citizenship of the town of Rüthen in 1668 , of which he was a member from 1678 - with a short interruption - until his death. In 1670 he signed the marriage bond, which resulted in eight children.

Gladbach worked with various master builders of his time, in particular the collaboration with Ambrosius von Oelde could be confirmed . The "Rarus Sculptor" ("unique sculptor") Paul Gladbach, as he is referred to in contemporary church registers, also had special relationships with the Capuchin Order , who engaged him several times (cf. the furnishings of the monastery churches in Paderborn and Werne ).

Work and style

Gladbach's sculptures and altars are represented in almost all regions of Westphalia, so that his workshop can be considered one of the most fertile in the former duchy. The preserved carved altars show him as a “master of a down-to-earth, high-quality baroque”.

From today's perspective, the altars of Marienmünster Abbey - some of Gladbach's works fell victim to fire or theft over time - as Gladbach's main work. In addition to Rüthen (pulpit and Elisabeth altar of St. Nicholas' Church ), other works were also produced, for example, in Werne (interior decoration of the monastery church of the Capuchin monastery ), Paderborn (interior decoration of the church of St. Michael`s monastery ), Oestinghausen (high altar of St. Stephen`s church ) and Warstein (side altars of the old church ) as well as in Soest (organ prospectus of the St. Pauli church ).

Attempts have been made on various occasions to describe Gladbach's peculiar stylistics, for example by   Eberhard Henneböle and Ulrich Grun. Accordingly, his altars often appear “a little swelling” in the middle or lower area, but never top-heavy. The physiognomies of Gladbach's angel heads ( putti ), which seem to have been developed based on natural human models rather than appearing in any way idealized or stylized, are also a special feature : “Gladbach goes so far that some angels make slightly embarrassed faces like Scolded children, for example at the basket in the Rüthener pulpit.
