Paul Luther (born January 28, 1533 in Wittenberg , † March 8, 1593 in Leipzig ) was a German medic and personal physician to the Duke of Saxony.

Life

Paul Luther, the fifth child of Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora , first studied the Greek and Latin languages ​​with Philipp Melanchthon and Veit Winsheim . On Melanchthon's advice, he then switched to studying medicine at the Wittenberg University . On July 29, 1557 he received Oratio de pulmone et discrime arteriae tracheae et oesophagi; [Luther: De aporismo sexto patris II.] The medical doctorate. After his inaugural speech De Arte medica et cura tuenda valetudinis , he taught from December 8, 1558 as a professor of medicine at the newly founded University of Jena .

He was then called to the Brandenburg court to see Elector Joachim II , until his death on April 3 , 1567 January 1571. He then became the personal physician of Elector August von Sachsen and his successor Christian I in Dresden , but withdrew from the court because of the unrest of the crypto-calvinists and disagreements at the time, privatized himself in Leipzig and was appointed as elector's personal physician again in 1592 .
