Paul Martin SM (born May 5, 1967 in Hastings , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand religious and Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch .

Life

Paul Martin joined the religious community of the Marist Fathers in 1985 and made his profession on January 7, 1988 . He studied at the University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington . After the pastoral course, he received the sacrament of ordination on September 4, 1993 from the Bishop of Palmerston North , Peter James Cullinane .

After ordination and a year in pastoral care, he completed a teaching degree and graduated from the Auckland College of Education in 1994 . In the following years he was active in pastoral care, as a teacher and headmaster. From 2014 to 2016 he was Vice Provincial and Provincial Economist of the New Zealand Marists.

On December 5, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Christchurch. He was ordained episcopal on March 3 of the following year by the Archbishop of Wellington , John Atcherley Cardinal Dew . Co- consecrators were the Old Bishop of Christchurch, John Basil Meeking , and the Bishop of Palmerston North, Charles Edward Drennan .
