Paul Phua (born April 29, 1964 in Miri ; actually Wei Seng Phua ) is a Malaysian businessman and poker player .

Personal

Phua grew up in his native city, Miri . When he was 15, he moved to Singapore to graduate from school. There he became a passionate bowler and eventually got into the casino business. From then on, Phua worked as a so-called “Junket” for various casinos in Macau and tried to win customers for them in this function. Over time, he became one of the biggest junkets in Macau and worked for the city's largest casinos, including a. for the Wynn and the Sands . Phua also invests in real estate . His fortune is estimated at about 400 million US dollars estimated.

Poker career

Phua played the poker variant Seven Card Stud as a teenager and switched to Texas Hold'em in his early 20s . Since 2012 he has occasionally taken part in live tournaments . Phua almost exclusively plays super high roller events, i.e. tournaments with buy-ins of at least 50,000 US dollars . In 2012 and 2016 he took part in the Big One for One Drop , which was the most expensive poker tournament of the year with a buy-in of one million US dollars and euros , but was unable to place in the prize money on both occasions.

Phua won the Aspers High Roller in London in late September 2012 and was awarded a £ 1 million prize , which at the time was worth more than $ 1.6 million. In mid-April 2013 he took third place at the High Roller Event of the World Series of Poker Asia Pacific in Melbourne, endowed with 325,000 Australian dollars . At the partypoker Live Millions Super High Roller Series in Sochi , he made the money five times in March 2020. Controversy

Phua and his son were arrested in July 2014 on charges of illegally betting on games in the 2014 World Cup and connections to the 14K triad . The case was dropped in early June 2015. From the dock, the Wynn Macau to have led an illegal gambling ring that Phua was also acquitted in March of 2019.
