Paul Schommer (born June 6, 1992 in Appleton ) is an American biathlete.
origin
Paul Schommer was born in Appleton , Wisconsin , where he grew up. In 2010 he graduated from high school in the neighboring community of Kimberly and then studied chemistry at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth until 2015 . During his school days he played soccer and was an active wrestler and cross-country runner . In 2008 he started cross-country skiing, which he intensified during his studies.
Career
After Paul Schommer took part in a biathlon screening course in Lake Placid in 2014 , he decided a year later to concentrate entirely on biathlon and was accepted into the US Biathlon development team in 2016.
He was already too old to take part in youth or junior competitions and therefore competed in his first international biathlon race in the IBU Cup . During his first outing at the sprint in Martell in March 2016 , he got the points straight away. In the 2016/17 season he also ran in the IBU Cup, in January 2017 he took part in his first World Cup race in Antholz , in the individual competition over 20 km he also secured his 33rd World Cup points in his first race. After participating in the 2017 European Biathlon Championships in Duszniki-Zdrój , he almost exclusively ran races in the World Cup for the rest of the winter. In the following season he took part in all World Cups until the turn of the year, but from January 2018 he was reassigned to the IBU Cup team and not nominated for participation in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . In some IBU Cup races he reached the points again, at the Biathlon European Championships 2018 in Ridnaun he missed this - and thus also the medal ranks - in some cases significantly. In the winter of 2018/19 he only took part in one international race, finishing the sprint at the World Cup in Hochfilzen as 104th of 106 athletes. A year later he only started in the IBU Cup at the beginning of the season, but was able to clearly surpass his previous performances there. Until the end of December he finished all races well within the points with one exception, with a second place in the sprint in Obertilliach he secured his first podium in the IBU Cup. In January 2020 he was reassigned to the US World Cup team. While he regularly did not reach the points in the individual races, he competed several times with the men's relay, which even achieved a top 10 placement at the World Cup in Ruhpolding . Schommer was also nominated for participation in the 2020 Biathlon World Championships in Antholz, where he placed - together with Leif Nordgren , Sean Doherty and Jake Brown - with the relay in eighth place again in the top 10.
