Paul Friedrich Carl Türpe (born June 16, 1859 in Berlin ; † June 20, 1944 ) was a German sculptor.

life and work

Paul Türpe was the youngest of the six children of master baker Johann Andreas Türpe and his wife Marie Louise, nee. Woelfert. Apart from Paul Türpe, only his sister Hedwig, who was two years older than him, reached adulthood. Türpe, who never married, lived with this sister all his life.

Türpe was trained in practical sculpture at the teaching school of the German Trade Museum in Berlin and then studied from 1879 to 1885 with Fritz Schaper at the Academy of Arts in Berlin.

In 1893 he took part in the world exhibition in Chicago . He received a bronze medal for his sculpture. Together with his professional colleagues Wilhelm Haverkamp and Heinrich Günther-Gera , Türpe was involved in the sculptural decoration of the Altona municipal museum in 1900/02.

With his bronze sculpture “Der Flieger”, Türpe participated in the 1929 exhibition “100 Years of Berlin Art in the Creation of the Association of Berlin Artists”. He also exhibited in other places, such as Paris . He received awards from the cities of Göttingen , Bonn , Mühlhausen and Danzig . Türpe's works were in Posen and Elberfeld .

In the period of inflation after the First World War , Paul Türpe got into economic hardship. He now switched to painting landscapes, still lifes and portraits. He also copied paintings by other artists to make a living.

In 1944 Paul Türpe and his sister were evacuated from Berlin to Güldenau in Posen , where they both died.

Stuhlmannbrunnen

Detail of the Stuhlmann Fountain

Türpe's most famous work is the Stuhlmannbrunnen in Altona. Türpe won the tender for the fountain, which had emerged from the legacy of the Altona citizen Günther Ludwig Stuhlmann , but was only put into practice in 1897, around 25 years after the donor's death. Türpe brought the victory in the competition against 57 competitors 1000 marks. The monument was stamped in copper by Otto Bommer and inaugurated on June 1, 1900. The fountain has since changed its location several times. The more than seven meter high fountain figures depict two centaurs fighting for a huge fish and are usually interpreted as a pictorial representation of the competition between Altona and Hamburg in the field of fishing. According to the family tradition by Harald Müller-Kirsten, the Centaur pulling at the net is also a self-portrait of Paul Türpe.

In 2008 the Altonaer Stadtarchiv eV began to offer guided tours inside the fountain. Visitors can climb up to the heads of the fountain figures via a ladder.
