Paul Weigold

Paul Weigold (born April 3, 1966 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ) is a university professor, conductor and singer coach.

Artistic career

Weigold first studied bassoon with Klaus Thunemann and then conducting with Lutz Köhler at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and with Wolf-Dieter Hauschild . In 1991 his first engagement at the Stadttheater Würzburg followed , where he developed a broad repertoire as a répétiteur and conductor . In 1994 he moved to the Hamburg State Opera . In 1997 he was engaged as a study director and conductor at the Vienna Chamber Opera , from 1999 he was responsible for numerous new productions and concerts there as artistic director . In 2001 Weigold was appointed director of studies at the Vienna State Opera . He held this position until 2005. At the Vienna State Opera he conducted the revival of Tchaikovsky's ballet Sleeping Beauty .

From 2002 to 2004 he worked at the Salzburg Festival and studied several productions for Valery Gergiev . Further stations as a conductor were the Opéra Bastille in Paris, the Teatro Regio di Torino as well as the Komische Oper Berlin and the Vienna Volksoper . Weigold was engaged for the Japan tour of the Vienna State Opera in 2012 as well as for the 2013 Opera Ball. He made his debut at the Teatro Real Madrid with Wagner's Parsifal .

Numerous guest engagements as a conductor of symphonic works have taken him to the Spanish National Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic , the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León , the Slovak and Macedonian Philharmonic as well as to Finland, Latvia and Hungary. His long-standing collaboration with Semyon Bychkov on CD recordings with the WDR Symphony Orchestra , the Vienna State Opera, the Teatro Real Madrid and the BBC Symphony Orchestra London has had a major impact on his work .

Teaching

Weigold has been a professor at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media since 2006 and heads the singing / opera department. In addition, he was a guest lecturer at the Berlin University of the Arts for several years . Masterclasses took him to Montepulciano , to Yonsei University and the Korea National University of Arts in Seoul, to the Shanghai Opera Center and to the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore. Since 2017 he has been visiting professor at Hanyang University in Seoul .
