Paulus Praetorius (* 1521 in Bernau near Berlin ; † 1565 in Halle (Saale) ) was a pedagogue and scholar . He was mainly active in Brandenburg and in the diocese of Magdeburg .

Life

Praetorius was born in Bernau as the son of a brewer and draper and grandson of the mayor. His original surname was Schultheiß or Schultze, which he later translated into Latin (Scultetus). He studied at the Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) and then went back to Bernau to work as the rector of the Latin school there.

Elector Joachim II was looking for an educator for his children Friedrich and Sigismund and brought Praetorius to him in 1547. When Friedrich became Archbishop of Magdeburg and administrator of the Halberstadt diocese in 1551 , Praetorius accompanied him and provided advice on political and legal matters. He continued this activity after Friedrich's death (1552) with his successor Sigismund.

Diplomatic missions also took him to Emperor Ferdinand , who awarded him a letter of arms in 1561 , thus ennobling him. He had a biological daughter and also adopted Samuel Faber (1543-1605) in 1562, who was henceforth called Samuel Praetorius. This was the son of Sebastian Faber (1515–1553), a Bernauer archdeacon . Paulus Praetorius great-grandson Johannes Praetorius (1611–1664) received the name Praetorius von Richthofen on July 29, 1661 with the bohemian knighthood and is thus the origin of the noble family Richthofen by name .

Praetorius was buried in Halle's Stadtgottesacker in crypt arch 22.
