history

At the confluence of the Heart River in the Peace River, a settlement was built for the first time at the end of the 19th century, which initially bore the name Peace River Crossing after a path in the region that was widely used at the time. In 1898, an outpost which was North-West Mounted Police established and in 1899 was with the local Cree of Treaty 8 concluded that allowed the colonization of the region. In 1909 the Canadian government built a ferry crossing over the Peace River. As a result, a strong influx of people into the settlement began, so that Peace River Crossing was incorporated as a village in 1914. In 1916 the village got its current name. In the same year the Central Canada Railway reached the village and in 1919 a rail and road bridge was built over the Peace River. In the same year the settlement was incorporated as a town. Although an oil rush set in at the time, agriculture remained an important industry. The construction of the Alaska Highway in the 1940s and the opening of a pulp mill in the 1980s ensured further economic growth.

Southwest of today's municipality was the Fort Fork trading post of the North West Company , where Alexander MacKenzie and his companions wintered on their first crossing of North America north of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean in the winter of 1792/93. The remains of the fort are now designated as the National Historic Site of Canada .
