Pecos is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Reeves County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located in west Texas, on the east bank of the Pecos River on US Highways 80 and 285 and Interstate 20 , is about 40 km to the north from New Mexico and has a total area of ​​18.9 km 2 with no significant water surface.

history

The town was founded in 1881 as part of the construction of the Texas and Pacific Railroad , when a train station was built on the site of a camp where herds of cattle crossed the Pecos River via a ford . Pecos has been the capital of Reeves County since 1884 . In the 1890s, the city gained national attention because of the numerous shootings and revolver duels. In 1900 there were two schools in Pecos with a total of 148 students. The First National Bank of Pecos opened in 1904.

With the introduction of artificial irrigation, Pecos developed into a growing area for cotton , onions and cantaloupe melons and a supply center for surrounding farms, ranches and oil fields. During the Second World War, numerous military installations were relocated to Pecos and the "Pecos Army Air Field" was built.

In the 1960s, Pecos experienced an economic boom due to the nearby sulfur mining . When the sulfur mines were closed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the city fell into an economic crisis and lost around a third of its population in the following years.

According to the 2000 census, 9,501 people lived here in 3,168 households and 2,455 families. The population density was 501.8 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 76.32% White, 2.45% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, and 18.06% other ethnic groups. About 2.22% were mixed race and 79.57% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.97 and the average family size was 3.47 people.

32.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7% 18 to 24, 24.2% 25 to 44, 21.7% 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 93.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 89.0 men.

The per capita income was $ 11,857. 27.1% of the population and 23.4% of families are below the poverty line.
