Pediocactus peeblesianus subsp. fickeiseniorum is a subspecies of the plant species Pediocactus peeblesianus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). English common names are "Fickeisen Cactus" and "Navajo Cactus". The subspecies is threatened and was included in Appendix I of the Washington Convention for the Protection of Endangered Species.

description

The spherical to oval growing Pediocactus peeblesianus subsp. fickeiseniorum is 2 to 6.5 cm long and 2 to 5.5 cm wide. The upward-pointing corky central spine is characteristic. The yellow, tubular flowers are associated with the subspecies Pediocactus peeblesianus subsp. peeblesianus identical. They have a length and a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 cm. The subspecies grows in a limited area in the Grand Canyon area and is geographically isolated from the subspecies Pediocactus peeblesianus subsp. peeblesianus and Pediocactus peeblesianus subsp. menzelii .

Geophytic features as in representatives of the genus Pediocactus section Pediocactus ( Pediocactus paradinei , Pediocactus knowltonii ) and the section Rhytidospermae ( Pediocactus bradyi and its subspecies) become clear. The flowering time is in April.

Pediocactus peeblesianus subsp. fickeiseniorum is hardy to minus 20 ° C when dry. Real-root cultivation in Europe is possible.

distribution

Pediocactus peeblesianus subsp. fickeiseniorum is one of the rarest and smallest subspecies in the United States. The subspecies grows endemically in Arizona on plains in grasslands or limestone hills at altitudes of 1400 to 1700 m and is associated with Echinocereus triglochidiatus , Echinocereus engelmannii , Escobaria vivipara , various Opuntia species and Yucca baccata .

Systematics

The subspecies is named in honor of Norman and Florence Fickeisen, the co-discoverers. It was first described as Navajoa fickeisenii in 1960 by Curt Backeberg . However, this was invalid according to the rules of the ICBN . A correct publication as Navajoa peeblesiana var. Fickeiseniorum took place in 1994 by Fritz Hochstätter . In 1999 Jonas Martin Lüthy placed the variety, which has meanwhile been raised to the rank of a subspecies, in the genus Pediocactus .
