The steep-sided Kalkberg Peilstein in the southern Vienna Woods is 716 m high, is located in the municipality of Altenmarkt and Weissenbach east of Nöstach and is popular as a climbing garden because of its steeply sloping rock faces to the west . At the summit is the Peilsteinhaus of the Austrian Alpine Club , built in 1923 (initially privately) , on the hiking trail to Schwarzensee the Peilsteinhütte of the Friends of Nature, built after World War II .
The rugged rock owes its appearance to the remains of the Paratethys primeval ocean at the end of the Eocene , around 35 million years ago. There were and are z. Some large fossil ammonites , mussels and snails were found.
In the Celtic period the mountain was probably sanctified as a druid altar . From No Home. 48 in Nöstach, the age-old peasant Good Fux-yard out, the highly visible climbing rocks as iron sights with two mounds known as Visurhügel were used are being targeted, the name which etymologically explained. Village historians suspect it is used to determine dates or as a calendar to determine the sowing and harvest time.
In 1895 the Peilstein-Warte was built on the summit, but had to be dismantled in 1947 due to war damage.

Remarks
- ↑ Built by the Austrian Mountain Association at the height of the Peilstein , opened and consecrated on October 20, 1895 . In the lower part of the 10 m high construction there was a shingled shelter with benches for “tired hikers” and in which drinks and cold dishes were sold on weekends from the 1920s. In 1926 the control room was repaired and increased by a structure from which one could overlook the entire Wienerwald area and that of the pre-Alps. In 1945 the control room received a direct shell hit and partially collapsed. Another entry was life-threatening and therefore prohibited. In 1947 it was completely removed. The waiting room was named Josef Leitner in honor of the former chairman of the Baden group of the Austrian Mountain Association. - Leo Wirtner: District Schwarzensee .
