The Pelagia is a Dutch research vessel. The ship is operated by the Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee (NIOZ). It can be used worldwide (with the exception of the polar regions).
history
The ship was built by Verolme Shipyard under hull number 1019. The ship was completed on April 23, 1991. It replaced the previous research ship Aurelia , which was commissioned in 1972 .
Technical specifications
The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . The fixed propeller is driven by an electric motor with an output of 1000 kW . Two generator sets are available for the power supply of the drive motor . The generators are driven by two diesel engines , a twelve-cylinder diesel engine ( Caterpillar 3508B DITA) with an output of 856 kW and an eight-cylinder diesel engine (Caterpillar 35012B DITA) with an output of 1,020 kW, and have connected loads of 1,000 and 1,130 kVA . Two generators, each with 300 kW output (apparent power: 375 kVA), which are driven by the main motors, are available for powering the on-board network. In addition, an emergency generator with 230 kW power (apparent power: 288 kVA) was installed, which is driven by a Caterpillar diesel engine (3406 DITA). The ship has a bow thruster with 450 kW power.
The ship can stay at sea for up to 25 days, covering 6,600 nautical miles .
Furnishing
The ship has seven decks . The open working deck on the aft is 135 m². Five laboratories are available for research work. Additional laboratory and storage capacities can be made available via containers , five of which can be stowed in the hold of the ship and four on deck.
At the stern of the ship there is a swiveling stern boom with a lifting capacity of 10 t. Another lifting tool with a capacity of 10 t is also located on the starboard side of the ship. In addition, several cranes are available, including a larger working crane with 10 t lifting capacity in the aft section. Various winches are also available.
A total of 25 cabins are available on board, each designed for one person. Eleven of the cabins, nine of which can be converted into double cabins, are available to the scientific staff. The ship is operated by eleven crew members and is approved for twelve passengers.
