The Penser Weißhorn (also Sarner Weißhorn or Sarntaler Weißhorn , Italian Corno Bianco ) is a 2705 m slm high mountain in the Sarntal Alps in South Tyrol. As the highest point in the vicinity, the Penser Weißhorn offers a comprehensive view, especially of the eastern and western Sarntal Alps. The eastern flank of the mountain slope forms the source area of the Talfer .
Location and surroundings
The striking summit is located in the northern part of the Sarntal Alps. In the north lies the valley of the Sennerbergalm , a side valley of the Jaufental . To the northeast, the ridge runs out over the 2586 m high Gartlspitze to the 2211 m high Penser Joch . To the southeast the mountain drops steeply to the 2590 m high scree pass . The Oberbergtal , a side valley of the Sarntal , stretches to the south-west ; to the west, a ridge runs to the Ötschspitze ( 2590 m ).
geology
The Penser Weißhorn is largely made up of mica-rich slate gneisses and amphibolites . However, dolomites and limestone from the Triassic can also be found on the southern flank .
Alpinism
The first known ascent of the Weißhorn goes back to A. Siegl and Carl Wechner in 1822.
The normal route to the summit is a marked path from the Gerölljoch through the southern flank of the mountain. This ascent contains short sections secured by wire rope and requires easy climbing of difficulty level I (UIAA) . Starting points are the Penser Joch, the Oberbergtal or the Passeier valley to the west . The climbs over the Oberbergtal or from the east are also possible as a demanding ski tour in winter .
Another marked ascent leads over the west ridge. The starting point for this route is the Jaufental. The Weißhorn is on the so-called horseshoe tour, a seven-day tour through the Sarntal Alps.
