Pentagastrin is a synthetic oligopeptide that has the same effect as gastrin when given parenterally . It stimulates the secretion of gastric acid , pepsin , and the intrinsic factor .

Pentagastrin binds to the cholecystokinin B receptor, which is expressed by many cells in the brain. Activation of this receptor triggers the phospholipase C second messenger system. When given intravenously , panic attacks and gastrointestinal complaints up to and including vomiting can sometimes be triggered.

application

It is routinely used to perform the pentagastrin test in medical diagnostics. Pentagastrin is also used in a stimulation test to increase serotonin levels and causes symptoms of carcinoid syndrome . It provokes flushing and can help diagnose patients who complain of episodic flushing but have normal or only slightly elevated levels of markers specific to carcinoid syndrome. It has also been used to stimulate ectopic gastric mucosa to detect Meckel's diverticulum by nuclear medicine imaging.

pharmacology

After intravenous administration, pentagastrin has a half-life of about 10 minutes and is mainly eliminated by the liver.
